The Monitor Sul-Mineiro Journal came with the idea of a monument at the place where the ashes of José de Alencar lie. When the idea was communicated to Rio de Janeiro it was greeted by the press with deserved words of praise and rejoicing.
As for myself I applaud with both hands this most noble initiative.
I have said in these columns what I felt regarding the great merits of the author of the Guarany; I’m in tune with all those who appreciated the life of that superior talent who managed to leave a vivid mark wherever he ventured himself into, be it politics or literature, oratory or jurisprudence.
To raise the deserved monument is the obligation of those who outlive him and most of all of those who work in the press, either through books or newspapers as both were honored with the writings of that mighty spirit.
Congratulations to Monitor Sul-Mineiro.

O Monitor Sul-Mineiro iniciou a idéia de monumento no lugar em que repousam as cinzas de José de Alencar. Esta idéia, comunicada ao Rio de Janeiro, foi saudada pela imprensa com as palavras merecidas de louvor e animação.
Pela minha parte aplaudo com ambas as mãos o nobilíssimo projeto.
Já disse nessas colunas o que sentia acerca do elevado mérito do autor do Guarany; fiz coro com todos quantos apreciaram em vida aquele talento superior, que soube deixar um vivo sulco onde quer que passou, política ou literatura, eloqüência ou jurisprudência”
Levantar o monumento merecido é dever dos que lhe sobrevivem, é dever sobretudo dos que trabalham na imprensa, ou por meio de livros, ou por meio de jornais, que uns e outros foram honrados com os escritos daquele espírito potente.
